Defining adult foster care is challenging largely due to the many different names by which it is referred and the lack of a national standard. For the purposes of this article, adult foster care refers to care provided to persons of adult age in a home-like environment. Breaking that down further; care is typically non-medical in nature, involves assistance with the activities of daily living and ongoing supervision. A home-like environment means a house with shared living and dining areas in which assistance is provided to a very few number of individuals.
