My only recourse, apparently, is for them to send a code to a mostly obscured email address, which I have no idea what is is. Ethan Hill. It's not a well-kept secret, either. Just a simple string of characters—maybe six of them if you're careless, 16 if you're cautious—that can reveal everything about you.

When you set your password, they could extract various 4-character permutations, and store a salted hash of those characters along with their positions within the password. They're basically making a number of smaller passwords out of the alphabet you supplied via the characters in your password. Then they can salt, hash, and store these small passwords just like would be done for a full password.
