Background: Little research has evaluated the social and sexual network-related health outcomes of young black transgender women TGW or compared these outcomes with those of black men who have sex with men MSM. Social network analysis offers one potent means of understanding the dynamics driving the broad spectrum of adverse outcomes experienced by these subgroups. Methods: We examined the social and sexual health network traits of black individuals assigned male at birth who have sex with men, 47 7. Using respondent-driven sampling, data collection occurred over three waves between and , in Chicago, Illinois.
This article was published in collaboration with Injustice Watch , a nonprofit newsroom focused on exposing institutional failures that obstruct justice and equality. The posts were written by low-level officers, sergeants, lieutenants, and other correctional staffers — including a counselor and a parole officer — from across the state. They openly discussed private information about inmates, including alleged sexual acts and medical treatments they received. The degrading comments are coming to light as the department is embroiled in a series of pending lawsuits, including a class-action claim brought by six transgender women contending they received inadequate medical treatment while in prison. Over the past twenty-five years, the transgender movement has gained statutory nondiscrimination protections at the state and local levels, hate crimes protections in a number of states, inclusion in a federal law against hate crimes, legal victories in the courts, and increasingly favorable policies in bureaucracies at all levels. It has achieved these victories despite the relatively small number of trans people and despite the widespread discrimination, poverty, and violence experienced by many in the transgender community. This is a remarkable achievement in a political system where public policy often favors those with important resources that the transgender community lacks: access, money, and voters.
